QUICK ANSWER

For most compatible TVs and soundbars, start with HDMI ARC. It handles everyday TV audio and can support TV-remote volume control through HDMI-CEC. Choose eARC when both devices support it and you need higher-bandwidth audio formats. Use optical when ARC is unavailable or your setup only needs the formats optical supports.

HDMI does not automatically make an identical audio signal sound better. The practical differences are format support, device compatibility and control convenience.

Trying to decide between HDMI and optical for your soundbar? First check the labeled ports on your TV and soundbar. Then consider what you watch, which audio formats your equipment supports and whether you want to use one remote.

HDMI ARC vs Optical vs eARC: Key Differences

ARC stands for Audio Return Channel. It sends audio from the TV back to a compatible soundbar over HDMI. eARC is the enhanced version with greater audio capacity. Optical, also called TOSLINK, carries digital audio through a separate optical connection.

Connection capabilities: actual format support depends on your equipment

A connection's capacity is not a guarantee of product support. The source, TV output or passthrough settings, and soundbar must all support the intended format. See the official HDMI eARC overview for the interface's capabilities.

Does HDMI ARC Sound Better Than Optical?

Not necessarily when both deliver the same audio signal. If your TV sends the same stereo PCM audio over either connection and the soundbar uses equivalent settings, changing the cable alone is not a reason to expect clearer dialogue or stronger bass.

A difference can appear when the connection changes the format reaching the soundbar. For example, comparing stereo over optical with a supported surround stream over HDMI is also a comparison of audio formats, not just cables.

How to make a useful comparison

  1. Play the same scene or music track from the same source.
  2. Match the listening volume and keep EQ, dialogue enhancement and sound modes consistent.
  3. Check the soundbar's display or app for the received format, where available.
  4. Listen for dialogue clarity, dropouts and synchronization rather than assuming the newer connection must win.

The connection also does not determine your physical speaker layout. For that distinction, see our guide to 2.1, 3.1, 5.1 and 5.1.2 soundbar channels.

Do You Need eARC for Dolby Atmos?

It depends on how the Atmos audio is delivered. Compatible ARC setups can carry Atmos in Dolby Digital Plus. For Atmos in Dolby TrueHD traveling from the TV to the soundbar, you need a compatible eARC connection.

Optical cannot carry those Dolby Digital Plus or Dolby TrueHD Atmos streams. A soundbar offering a virtual surround mode over optical does not mean it is receiving an Atmos stream.

Check the content, playback app or source device, TV passthrough support and soundbar decoding. An Atmos badge on a film or an eARC label on a port does not prove that the complete playback chain supports the intended format. Manufacturer lists such as Sonos's supported home theater audio formats show why model-specific checks matter.

What if your TV cannot pass the required format?

If the soundbar has a suitable HDMI input, connecting an external player directly to it may provide another route. Confirm that the soundbar also passes the video resolution, refresh rate and HDR features you need. This arrangement does not replace the return connection for audio from the TV's own apps.

Should You Use HDMI or Optical for Your Soundbar?

Choose HDMI ARC for everyday TV and streaming

Start with ARC when both devices support it and it handles your content's audio formats. Compatible HDMI-CEC control can make volume adjustment and power operation more convenient. CEC behavior and menu names vary by manufacturer.

Choose eARC for higher-bandwidth audio

Use eARC when your compatible system needs lossless surround or uncompressed multichannel audio routed through the TV. Check format support separately: eARC transport capability does not add missing decoders to a soundbar.

Choose optical when ARC is unavailable

Optical is useful when the TV has a digital optical output and the soundbar has a matching input. It can serve stereo playback and supported Dolby Digital 5.1 setups. For other connection options, read how to connect a soundbar to a TV without HDMI ARC.

Keep optical if it already meets your needs

If your current optical setup sounds good, stays synchronized and carries the format you need, there is no need to replace it solely because HDMI is available. Change when you need a specific benefit, such as compatible remote control or a format optical cannot carry.

How to Connect Your TV and Soundbar

HDMI ARC or eARC setup

TV HDMI ARC/eARC port → Soundbar TV ARC/eARC port

  1. Find the ports explicitly labeled ARC or eARC. A regular TV HDMI input does not automatically provide audio return.
  2. Connect them using a cable that meets the manufacturers' requirements. The soundbar port may say HDMI OUT (TV ARC/eARC), even though it receives returning TV audio.
  3. Select the soundbar's TV or ARC input and the TV's external audio-system output.
  4. Enable ARC/eARC and HDMI-control settings as directed in the device manuals.
  5. Test a TV app, then test connected players separately. Check the received audio format where your soundbar provides that information.

Optical setup

TV Optical Digital Audio Out → Soundbar Optical In

  1. Remove protective connector caps if fitted and align the plugs without forcing them.
  2. Select the soundbar's optical input and the TV's optical audio output.
  3. Select an output format supported by the soundbar.
  4. Test volume control. If the TV remote does not control the soundbar, check whether the soundbar supports compatible infrared control or remote learning.

No sound, stereo only or an audio delay?

  • No sound: Check the selected input, output and labeled ports. Temporarily try PCM to identify a format-compatibility problem; it may reduce playback to stereo.
  • TV apps work, but an external player does not: Check the player's output format and the TV's passthrough capabilities.
  • Surround content plays in stereo: Check the actual received format before changing cables. Review the source and TV settings.
  • The TV remote stops working: Check HDMI-CEC settings for HDMI connections, or the separate remote-control setup used with optical.
  • Audio and picture do not match: Compare another app or source and follow the device manuals for audio-delay adjustments. Changing the connection is not a guaranteed fix.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is HDMI ARC better than optical for a soundbar?

Usually it is the more convenient starting point when both devices support it, especially for compatible TV-remote control. Whether it offers an audio advantage depends on the formats your equipment can send and play.

Is eARC better than optical?

eARC has greater audio capacity and can carry formats optical cannot. That matters for a compatible system using those formats, but does not automatically improve basic stereo playback.

Can optical deliver 5.1 surround sound?

Yes, with a supported compressed format such as Dolby Digital 5.1 and compatible source, TV output and soundbar decoding. Optical does not carry uncompressed 5.1 PCM.

Will an eARC TV work with an ARC-only soundbar?

Check whether the TV also supports ARC operation. Where that connection is supported, it operates within ARC's capabilities; buying a different cable does not upgrade an ARC-only soundbar to eARC.

Should I connect HDMI ARC and optical at the same time?

Normally, choose one audio path. Connecting both does not combine their sound quality. Follow the device instructions if your particular setup requires both cables.

Does a more expensive HDMI or optical cable sound better?

Price alone does not establish better sound. Choose a reliable cable suitable for the required connection and length. If playback drops out, investigate the cable, ports and settings instead of assuming a premium-priced replacement is the only solution.

Choosing Connections for an OEM Soundbar Project

For brands and importers, define the intended customer setup before finalizing the interface list. HDMI ARC can suit everyday TV use, eARC can support higher-bandwidth requirements, and optical can help accommodate older televisions. Exact capabilities depend on the proposed model and configuration.

  • Specify formats by input: List the audio formats each connection must accept, rather than relying on a general surround-sound claim.
  • Define control behavior: Include volume, mute, power, standby recovery and input switching.
  • Test representative equipment: Record TV model, firmware, source, settings and received audio format during sample evaluation.
  • Prepare clear instructions: Include readable port labels, connection diagrams and model-specific troubleshooting.
